Across the country, clinics are under pressure. Staffing shortages, rising patient needs, and increased documentation demands are pushing providers to the edge. Many physicians are spending more time in the EHR than with patients. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that for every hour of direct patient care, providers spend nearly two hours on clerical tasks.¹ The American Medical Association continues to confirm this burden and has issued new guidance to reduce it.²
Workforce challenges add another layer. Clinics in primary care, behavioral health, and rural communities face limited access to providers. Many clinicians are reducing hours, leaving practice early, or transitioning to non-clinical roles. These changes cost health centers time, resources, and continuity of care. Executive teams recognize that while there is no one-size-fits-all solution, meaningful provider engagement and a supportive work environment are critical to long-term sustainability.
Physicians do not enter medicine to become data entry clerks. The purpose and satisfaction of practicing medicine come from connection, intellectual challenge, and delivering meaningful care. But those values are hard to maintain in a system overrun by administrative burden. Support makes the difference. Providers who work with stable care teams and consistent staff report higher satisfaction, better teamwork, and more energy for clinical work. Trusted relationships with RNs, medical assistants, and remote medical scribes help restore a sense of control and connection in the clinic.
